Summer Solstice

2025-06-23

Last Saturday was the summer solstices, the solar term with the longest daylight hours in the Northern Hemisphere. The hot summer officially started when the sun was directly over the Tropic of Cancer. The human body is prone to perspiration and energy consumption during this period of strong Yang energy. Light meals are recommended to dissipate heat and restore fluids.

During the summer solstice, eat more dishes made from the following vegetables:

Green beans

Green beans are rich in protein, dietary fiber, and vitamins A and C. They can promote intestinal peristalsis, aid digestion, and maintain the health of the skin and mucous membranes. Their high potassium content helps balance electrolytes in the body and prevent summer fatigue.

Note: Be sure to cook thoroughly to avoid discomfort caused by saponins.

Ways to eat: stir-fried green beans with garlic, stir-fried green beans, stir-fried green beans with pork slices.

Okra

Okra's mucus contains pectin and polysaccharides, which can protect the gastric mucosa and slow down the rise of blood sugar, making it suitable for diabetic patients. Its high calcium and vitamin K contribute to bone health, and its low calories make it suitable for weight control.

Ways to eat: okra salad, okra scrambled eggs, okra miso soup.

Loofah

Loofah has a 94% water content and is rich in potassium, vitamin C, and vitamin B group. It can reduce swelling, encourage diuresis, eliminate heat and relieve summer heat, and quench thirst. Constipation can be alleviated and intestinal peristalsis encouraged by its natural plant mucus (xylan).

Ways to eat: Loofah and clam soup, steamed loofah with garlic, stir-fried loofah with mushrooms.

Around the summer solstice, it's hot and muggy. Increased consumption of seasonal vegetables can cool the body and strengthen the heart. Remember to moderately rehydrate as well!
